Lec-dems by mridangists
Sampradaya is a unique archiving, documentation and research organisation dedicated to the preservation of South Indian music tradition. It has identified yet another project of current relevance. The mridangam has developed both in the number of performers and in competence and expertise, thanks to the leadership provided by Palghat Mani Iyer and Palani Subramania Pillai.
Today, even some rasikas and musicians do not appreciate or understand thelegitimate role of the mridangam. Sampradaya responds to the situation through a project, entitled `Sogasuga mridanga talamu A Celebration of Intelligence,' which marks the institution's Silver Jubilee. It will consist of a series of lecture-demonstrations covering various aspects of the mridangam to be presented by the most eminent mridangam vidwans of the day.
This project will be inaugurated at the Music Academy Mini Hall, on December 1 by P. Obul Reddy. The series is scheduled for Dec. 1 and 2 at the above venue for Dec. 3, 12 and 13 at the Asthika Samajam. Two more dates for two more lectures will be announced later. The Lec-Dems will be delivered by T.K. Murthy, Palghat Ragu, Umayalpuram . K. Sivaraman, T.V.Gopalakrishnan, Trichy Sankaran, Karaikudi Mani and T.R. Rajamani.
