VOCAL IS BEST

Responses to the music season from a cross-section of the audience

I like only vocal music. Why? Because in Carnatic music, sahitya is vital and you can't get it on an instrument. The last I time I heard a violin cutcheri was years ago, when T. N. Krishnan played solo! But I was impressed by Akkarai Subhalakshmi's style and skills as an accompanist.

And so here I am at Raga Sudha Hall on a rainy day, listening to her duet with sister Swarnalata. Satheesh Kumar and S. Karthick on mridangam and ghatam are added incentives.

Today's recital was excellent. Ramapriya was good, but I didn't know the kriti they played. Sankarabharanam moved me. Yadukulakambodi was the best piece of the morning.

What I appreciated most was the way the senior percussionists supported and encouraged the girls. They did not patronise or dominate but gave the youngsters all the confidence they needed.

Together they made the listeners feel good and happy.

Kanchana,

T.Nagar
