PERFECT MATCH

Responses to the music season from a cross-section of the audience

His Mohanam was pramaadam, outstanding. What sweep, imagination and control! The kriti "Sri Ramaramani Manohara" was a perfect match for the alapana and rendered as spiritedly.

On that day at the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Sanjay Subrahmaniam enunciated the lyric clearly. M. A. Sundaresan's violin blended beautifully with the music. When Sanjay flashed some prayogas, the violin was equal to the task of flashing them back. That Mohanam is still with me.

Bhairavi was fine too, followed by ``Chintayamam." It was profound, expansive and attractive. Both ragas reminded you of the veterans of the past. But Sanjay had his own way of dealing with the music.

Brigas were there, but not overdone. The contributions of Karaikkudi Mani (mridangam) and B. S. Purushothaman (kanjira) heightened the impact.

But I must say that the singer did not look like a traditional Carnatic musician. Well, times change and we must learn to change with them.

SAROJA BALASUBRAMANIAN,

ABHIRAMAPURAM
