WEAK OCTAVE

Responses to the music season from a cross-section of the audience

Charulata Mani in Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha has a fantastic reach in the lower octave, though the voice does get a bit weak in the higher octave. Her raga alapana is very good.
Latangi, followed by Venkataramana, was the highlight. She built a fine structure, missing nothing in the raga.
With her rich voice she could have established a fuller foundation in Kambodi. Jayanti Keshav and Mannargudi J. Balaji gave good support.Charulata has talent. But she needs to hone it further. Her kritis are too rushed to satisfy. "O Rangasayee" deserved a sounder treatment. Having dedicated her concert to M.S. Subbulakshmi, she also sang "Shambho Mahadeva," "Rangapura Vihara," "Jagaddhodharana" and "Mudi Onri" from the M.S. repertoire.
What made these songs so magical when M.S. sang them was the spirit of bhakti. I don't think Mudi Onri' is a great composition. But M.S. rendered it with so much feeling for the ragabhava and arthabhava that it became remarkable. You cannot achieve anything like that quality if you race through the songs. I must add that the way Charulata was dressed created the right traditional ambience. I enjoyed that.
