UNHURRIED AND WEIGHTY

Responses to the music season from a cross-section of the audience

It's a year since I heard Vijay Siva. I was taken aback when he began his concert at the Kartik Fine Arts with Sarada Bhujangam. But I realised that the sloka fitted into the concert format after all. I have an affinity for the D. K. Pattammal and D. K. Jayaraman school. It has weight, bhava and gamakam. Vijay Siva has those attributes. He has added his inputs to his guru's style without straying from tradition.
That day he sang Kiravani (``Kaligiyunte") and Todi (``Ramachandrena"). Serious ragas handled with maturity. Nothing superfluous or showy. His approach to raga and kriti is reflective and full of bhava. R. K. Sriramkumar (violin) played brilliantly. He and Vijay have the advantage of long-term bonding on and off the stage. Brother Manoj Siva didn't play just rhythmic patterns, he played for the music with real understanding. There was nothing slapdash or hurried about the concert.
