It was a lesson in dance, when the students of Nrityagram presented an Odissi programme. Nrityagram is the brainchild of the late Protima Bedi. This institution in Karnataka continues to train interested students in dance. Many of them have made Nrityagram their abode. The ballet opened with slokas on Lord Krishna. The Bhairav hymn (Mayamalvagowla) depicted various sports of the Krishna, in which the Kalinga Mardana episode was beautifully portrayed.
Next was a composition made up of swaras in Vasanta. Susruta Sen, who choreographed most of the items, also took part enhancing the show with her beautiful presence. ``Dheera Sameere," the famous Ashtapadi of Jayadeva was soaked in bhava. Sen exhibited wonderful abhinaya for the lines, `Na Kuru Nitambini' and `Pasyati Saa Panthaanam.' The tune reminded one of the famous `Ghana Syama Sundara' from the film, "Amar Bhoopali." It was exquisite, each dancer striking poses with perfect symmetry. Perfection was the hallmark of the programme. Another Ashtapadi, ``Yaamihe," was a solo number by Susruta Sen. It was felt that Radha had come again on the stage, when she brought out pathos in the line, `Sakheejana Vanchitaa.' The music composed by the great singer, Raghunath Panigrahi, was excellently rendered. Nrityagram has to be heartily congratulated on a splendid Odissi performance.
