Perfect synchronisation

DIVYA M RAMESH

The violin concert of Srimati Brahmanandam and Anuradha Sridhar had a good selection of songs.

The mother-daughter violin duet synchronised so well that it sounded like a solo. Accompanied by R. Ramesh on the mridangam and K.V. Gopalakrishnan on the kanjira, Lalgudi Srimati Brahmanandam and Anuradha Sridhar presented a pleasant concert.

It covered different moods ranging from slow-paced songs to the medium and fast.

They opened the concert with "Kantajudumi" (Vachaspati), and followed it up with a good selection of songs such as "Emaninne" (Mukhari), "Dasharathim" (Nattaikurinji), "Eti Jenma" (Varali) and "Atukaradani" (Manoranjini). The main piece of the evening was Mysore Vasudevachar's "Rara Rajeevalochana" (Mohanam). The alternate rounds of swara kalpana were perfectly played. The tani avartanam was a rhythmic feast. On the whole, a satisfying concert.

Rajeshwari Satish, vocalist from London, had her initial training under M. A. Venugopal and C. S. Krishna Iyer. She is now pursuing music under the guidance of P. S. Narayanaswamy.

A well-planned and executed concert, Rajeshwari's raga outline for Suruti and alapana for Purvikalyani brought out the essence of the raga in the first few phrases.

"Ento Prema" (Surati varnam), Dikshitar's "Sri Ramaa Saraswati" (Nasamani), Mysore Vasudevachar's "Idi Samayamu" (Natakapriya), Syama Sastri's "Enneram Unnamam" (Purvikalyani), and "Sarivarilona" (Bhinnashadjam) formed the pre-tani pieces. The main piece, "Evarimata" (Khambodi), was a musical treat.

"Kalyana Gopalam," a tillana and a Kavadicchindu formed the rest of the programme. It was a pleasing concert, although Rajeshwari needs to work on her voice .

The violin and mridangam seem to drown her voice at times. Jyotsna (violin) and Udupi Balakrishnan (mridangam) provided apt accompaniment.

B. Jayanth, an NRI mridangist, accompanied violinists Lalitha and Nandini. A natural player, Jayanth is a disciple of vidwan T.K. Murthy. The concert had a conventional beginning with Purandaradasa's "Gajavadana Beduve" (Hamsadhwani). "Sriman Narayana" (Bowli) could easily be ranked as the song of the season, for it is being sung/played in many concerts as a dedication to M.S. Subbulakshmi! "Paratpara" (Vachaspati), "Kamakshi" (Bhairavi), and a racy "Kamalacharane" (Amritabehag), a composition of G.N. Balasubramaniam, formed the pre-tani part of the concert.

The main piece for the evening, "Ramakathasuta" (Madhyamavati), started off with a mellifluous raga alapana sprinkled with a few fast phrases. "Katrinile Varum Geetham," "Bho Shambo" (Revati), and a Tiruppugazh in Valaji comprised the post-tani part. .
