The performing team on The Music Academy platform on December 20 comprised N. Ramani, Atul Kumar, Suresh (flute trio) H.K. Venkatram (violin), Guruvayur Durai (mridangam) and Srirangam Kannan (morsing). The Sriranjani alapana by Suresh with all the requisite ingredients was likeable and the violinist responded tidily to it. "Bhuvinidasudani" of Tyagaraja was fitted with planned mathematical swara calculations in the Dhaivata kuraippu by Suresh, and that made the grade without running into too many air pockets. Ramani's Sankarabharanam with a polished sheen and mellifluence stressed the fact that the years of performing experience does have a cutting edge. Venkatraman's reply based on the essentials was reflective of the artiste's musical mind being on the right track.
"Enduku Peddala" of Tyagaraja has an eternal majestic stature. The flawless song version and Ramani's swara sequences with immaculate laya precision, had heads nodding in approval. Guruvayur Durai's standing in the field of percussion as a superb laya artiste with a thorough knowledge of the sensitive nuances of Carnatic music is undisputed. His lightning repartees were praiseworthy. His tani avartanam with Srirangam Kannan, in whose fingers morsing finds fresh dimensions, was profound in thought and deed.
As it was a Tuesday, the rendering of "Angarakamasrayamyaham," the Vaara kriti of Dikshitar in Suratti, was appropriate. Atul Kumar's Shanmukhapriya was an adequate expansion. However, less of haste and employing more vishranti-oriented phrasings would have made a greater impact. These attributes have to be consciously developed by young artistes to add quality to their performing standards. The brief tanam by Ramani and the Pallavi in khanda jathi Triputa talam with a Khanda Karvai after the aridi, the neraval and the tri-kala exercise, were sound displays. The Dhurita kala swaras and the ones in Sahana and Kanada signalled a mellifluous finish.
