Good song selection

CONFIDENT: Atul Kumar. Photo: K. V. Srinivasan.

In the junior bracket, Atul Kumar (flute), grandson of flute Ramani, showed enough signs of developing into a mature artiste.

With great self-confidence, he articulated Poorvikalyani ("Ninnu Vina Gamari") and Karaharapriya ("Chakkani Raja Marga"). He displayed an insight into the idiom of the ragas. They were well laid out springing from parampara — enunciating their lakshanas unambiguously. The selection of songs too was good — "Siddi Vinayakam" (Shanmukhapriya), "Venugana Loluni" (Kedaragowla) and "Madaava Mamava" (Nilambari). Atul Kumar had as accompanists Ambika Prasad (violin) and T. Shyam Sundar (mridangam) whose support was in harmony with his playing style.

Correction: In the write-up, "Shines with nuances," (January 4, Page 5) the review of O. S. Thyagarajan's concert was inadvertently repeated. The error is regretted.
