While most people would identify AV.Meiyappanwith movies, not many may know that AVM, the organisation has strong roots in the music industry.
AVM established Saraswathi Stores in 1932 to distributeHMV, Columbia and Odeon Records in the South of the country. In 1979 AVM started his own music company. He produced and marketed classical, film songs in the form of cassettes under the AVM banner.
AVM showed equal interest in the fields of cinema and music.
In 1984 Saraswathi Stores was revived and came to be known as AVM Audio. Besides musicians like Maharajapuram Santhanam, T.V, Sankara Narayanan, T.N. Seshagopalan, Sudha Raghunathan, Unni Krishnan and Sowmya, AVM Audio has popularised the performances of veteran musicians of yesteryear. AVM Audio enjoys the unique distinction of having released the first Tamil film songs in the CD format.
For the past 23 years, Saraswathi Stores has been holding an exhibition cum sale of a wide collection of musical recordings, annually. This year the cassette and CD exhibition begins on December 8, at Sankara Hall. The business house has recently licensed their entire catalogue to Sony Music.
In recognition of AVM's service in the field of music AVM's Sound Zone continues to serve the music fraternity with the patronage of connoisseurs.
