Tarangam music fest

Thirupoonthuruthy Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust will be celebrating the 10th Mini Music Festival of Namasankeerthana Tarangams from December 8-10, at Sringeri Pravachana Mandiram, Sringeri Mutt Road, Raja Annamalaipuram.

Saint-composer Narayana Tirtha is a household name in Andhra Pradesh. His tarangams from Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini are sung in all festivals, be it a grand occasion like a wedding or a relatively simple one like the naming ceremony of a child.

Hardly is there any stage performance of classical music or dance in Andhra Pradesh without tarangam being an integral part of it. When Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust celebrated the Jayanthi of the Swamigal at this birth place, Kaza (near Vijayawada) in July last, a large number of villagers as well as bureaucrats, professors and a section of the elite took active part. B.Udayalakshmi, District Collector of Prakasam district, is participating in Mini Music Festival and will light the Kuthuvilakku on December 8.

B.V.Ramana Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Vijayawada, another committed scholar of Narayana Tirtha's works will be inaugurating the festival. B.R.Kumar, Former Deputy Director General, Prasar Bharathi, Chennai, will preside.

Title for Bhagavathar

The title, `Namasankeertana Ratna' will be conferred on Vanchinatha Bhagavathar of Chennai by V.Vaidyanathan, industrialist, Chennai.

Dancer-choreographer Sujatha Vijayaraghavan will speak on the influence of Narayana Tirtha on dance. The saint himself is said to have taught tarangams to over 60 families in Ongole. The style is quite different from the way tarangams are sung by artistes from Tamil Nadu. The Ongole School emphasises rhythm and solkattus are quite prominent. Hyderabad Ghorakavi Sampath Kumar will render tarangams in that style on the inaugural day.

Udayalur Kalyanarama Bhagavathar and party will present a Divyanama bhajan on the second day. He will also perform Radha Kalyanam on the third day. Kanthimathi Santhanam and her group will do a feature on Rukmini Kalyanam on December 10 in pracheena sampradaya.

More than 30 artistes will take part in presenting tarangam music on the three days. Prasar Barathi is also recording some programmes for broadcast during the Music Season. The programme commences with Veda parayanam on December 8, 3.45 p.m.and concludes on December 10, 10.15 p.m. with Anjaneya Utsavam.
