BHARAT KALACHAR

Robust voice

If one closes the eyes and just listens to R. Raghavender, one will think it is a mature man singing in his robust voice. But Raghavender is just a teenager with a clear voice and the stage mannerisms of a popular vocalist. It is the age for youngsters to idolise their favourites and copy their styles. Only it needs grooming so that talent blossoms. The navaragamalika varnam, `Vallaba Nayakasya' in Begada (Dikshitar), a sketchy Salagabhairavi with `Padavini Sadbakthiyu' (Tyagaraja), `Sarasa Sama Dana' in Kapinarayani (Tyagaraja) and even Syama Sastri's `Devi Brova' in Chintamani, all hurtled through. The Kalyani raga exposition (`Ethavunara,'Tyagaraja) was loaded with clipped phrasings. Restiveness beyond a point can make the audience feel exasperated. This is where guidance will help.

The young band of accompanists Arunachala Karthik, Arjun Ganesh and V.V.S. Manian echoed the style of the singer.
