Sathur's Vidvat
Another strong voice though not as ringing as Chembai's was heard on Sunday. Sathur Subramaniam sang at the P. S. High School, Mylapore, under the auspices of "Nadopasana".
Subramaniam ensured the success of the concert by rejecting the mike. Like the full-throated Chembai, he is also an open-mouthed singer and is good at keeping the concert going.
His Suddhadhanyasi was a good raga effort with Thirupparkadal Veeraraghavan (violin) also scoring for his fine version. The vocalist's lakshana vidwath was evident in the sharp points at which he sang swaras for "Subramanyena" and the Kannada piece, "Sri Mathrubhutham".
In "Sri Mathrubhutham the raga line would have remained purer if in singing "Chinthaye" (ga maa paa), the madhyama had not been oscillated in the manner it was.
The Manji piece "Brovavamma" provided soothing music. Mylattur Ramachandran (mridangam) played a spirited thani.
