Krishnan's Tonal Richness

T. N. Krishnan's violin solo at the Srinivasa Sastri Hall on Tuesday under the auspices of "Alapana" had distinctive attractiveness for the way he embellished his essentially vocalist approach with the tonal richness and graces of his instrumental technique. It was incredible that the absence of the mike seemed to make no difference to his melodic violin and when one of the strings snapped halfway through the concert, he promptly took another violin and was soon playing on it so well that one hardly noticed the handicap.

The piece "Echarika" was lovely, played in chowka kalapramana. Mani Aiyar accompanied beautifully for this piece. Of course, "Najieevathara" (Bilahari) later was as much played by him as by the violinist.

The main raga was Thodi in which Krishnan's poised and expansive spell in the Mandhara sthayi filled the auditorium. The thanam had an attractive raga chain in which Dwijavanti was splendid. The four-kalai pallavi in Adi tala was well done with variations. Mani Aiyar's thani later was resplendent.
