WELL-PLANNED: Mambalam Sisters.
The vocal concert by Mambalam Sisters, Vijayalakshmi and Chitra, had neat rendition of kritis, with perfect sruti alignment. They always present well-planned programmes and have a great fan following.
The raga alapanas of Hindolam by Vijayalakshmi and Saveri by Chitra sounded as if they had sung just that way dozens of times. The same could be said of the swaras also. They sounded well rehearsed. But that did not seem to worry the listeners who never failed to applaud.
Beginning with `Sugunamule' in Chakravagam, which also included niraval and swaram, they presented the Thiruppavai verse, Mayanai Mannu,' and Oothukadu's `Nirupamasundarakara' in Panthuvarali which had a nice beat, before launching on Hindolam elaboration.
The chosen song was `Manasuloni.' `Cheta Sri Balakrishnam' in Dvijavanti was rendered with sincerity to the bhava and pronunciation. After a very quick `Puraharanandana' came the main item Saveri. The day being Anjaneya Jayanti the sisters chose Swati Tirunal's `Anjaneya.' The raga alapanas by both Chitra and Hemalatha on the violin were standard fare. Kumbakonam Saravanan on the mridangam and K.S.Rangacharee on the kanjira played a supportive role through the entire concert and played a neat thani. As always some popular numbers such as the `Mudi Onril,' in ragamalika, `Govardhana Giridhara' in Darbari Kanada and `Neerajadalanayana' in Vasanthi came as the concluding items.
