SRI PARTHASARATHY SWAMI SABHA

Interesting Purvikalyani

SOOTHING: Vijayagopal.

B.Vijayagopal's essay of `Ganamurthi' on the flute was reasonably good as was that of accompanist V.V.Ravi on the violin. The kalpanaswaras for the song `Ganamurthe' was soothing in parts, but could have been shorter. Vijayagopal began the concert with the navaragamalika varnam and `Gajavadana' in Sriranjani with swaraprastaras. After a fast-paced `Vidajalathura' in Janaranjani, he took up the major item Purvikalyani. The alapana was more interesting in the second half. Ravi's effort was also good and was of just the right duration. The chosen kriti was `Meenakshimemudam.' It was run of the mill stuff except for a few attractive phrases here and there by Ravi. Ganapthiraman on the mridangam was more understanding and subdued during the swara segment than he was during the earlier part of the concert. In the thani the kanjira artiste Nerkunram Shankar sounded more appealing. `Govardhanagiridhara,' `Aaduvome Pallupaaduvome' and a tillana were the lighter items.
