Punditry and Pleasant Surprises in the Pandal

The pandal concerts of the Music Academy festival excite tremendous interest and this year's card contained many unfamiliar names of lady artistes, particularly in the 1.30 - 3 p.m. bracket, giving rise to mixed expectations. Happily, some surprises were pleasant.

The special morning concert in the pandal by the President of the Conference, Madurai Srirangam Iyengar, had plentiful punditry (some style it as "sarakku") with Lalgudi Jayaraman (violin) matching it with the added grace of musical artistry and Palghat Mani Aiyar (mridangam) enormously enlivening it. Among the highlights were Nayaki ("Nee Bhajana") and "Epaapamu" (Atana). Mani Aiyar's thani was brilliant. Another special and very musical morning event in the pandal was the rendering of the 24 Astapadhis of Jayadeva by four female voices accompanied by two veenas, violin and the mridangam. The Khamboji and Kanada pieces were rather strange and the Ghanta without definite identity. Mangalakesi was diverting for its restricted range.
