Tamil Isai
The performance by M. M. Dandapani Desigar at the Tamil Isai annual conference at the Annamalai Manram on the inauguration day was satisfying, but not exciting. He built the concert around an elaborate Kambhoji. His voice though seasoned and strong, failed to impart thrill to the listeners. Nor did it, at the same time disappoint them.
Thiruvidaimaruthur Veerusami Pillai's nagaswaram performnce was placid and sedate, not evoking the feeling of soaring great heights that goes with the instrument.
The Shanmukhapriya the main raga was meandering, not peppered with spurts of speedy sweeping ascents and descents, which relieve the monotony of long Karvais and curves. The recital of Madurai N. Krishnan on Tuesday night did not live up to the usual standard expected of a disciple of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, particularly in the matter of keeping up the tempo of the concert, the hallmark of his guru.
The Atana Kirtana "Kanaka Sabapathikku" and the Thodi piece "Mandaradara Madhava" gave some life. But the dragging Khamboji kriti "Sri Subramanyaya Namasthe" prefaced by a short alapana again slowed down the pace of the concert. V. Sethuramiah was faithful in his violin accompaniment.
