Chaste Music
Chastity was the keynote of T. V. Namasivayam's concert in the pandal. Accompanied neatly by Dindigul Sethuraman (violin) and Palghat Krishnamani he gave a pretty version of Kiravani ("Kalikiyunte") and bettered his effort in Varali ("Mamava Meenakshi"). The ragamalika piece "Aarabhimaanam" and the Bhagesri Thiruppugazh in thisra nadai were very diverting. It was a splendid instrumental concert by flutist N. Ramani assisted brilliantly by Lalgudi Jayaraman (violin) and Ramabhadran (mridangam).
Ramani's soft melody invested his Dharmavathi ("Bhajanaseyaradha") with charm, while Jayaraman's version was more pointed. The concert reached the heights in Khambhoji (O Rangasayee) with the spells in the lower register both by Ramani and Jayaraman touching the heart.
In an unusually sedate concert Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar proved how sweet Sahana ("Raghupatha Rama") sung with a rich voice, can be. "Nidhisala Sukhama" with neraval and swaras was another highlight in this concert in which the veteran vindicated his discipline by completing all the items in the programme right on time. M. S. Gopalakrishnan (Violin) always shines in the veteran's company. T. V. Gopalakrishnan (Mridangam) played some pretty rhythmic varieties and formulations in the percussion interlude.
