Title for Dhananjayans
Feted: V.P.Dhananjayan receiving the award from Prince Marthanda Varma. Shanta Dhananjayan looks on.
The Centre for Music and Dance, Thiruvananthapuram, under the Chairmanship of Prof. G. Balamohan Thambi (former Vice-Chancellor, Kerala University) confers the title Kalanidhi on performing artistes above 60 years of age. A special jury selects couples of eminence.
The force behind the 23-year institute is Sushama Subramaniyam and her husband Kaniyampuzha Subramaniyam. This year’s award goes to V.P.Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan, veteran Bharatanatyam artists.
This is the fifth year the centre is honouring artistes of great merit. At a function held recently, Prince Marthanda Varma of Thiruvanthapuram gave away the award to the couple.
Awardees in the previous years include Pramukhan (musician-vocalist, who can handle almost 30 instruments with equal proficiency) and wife Kalamandalam Money (Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattom).
The young talent award ‘Balaratna’ was awarded to K.S.Harisankar Carnatic vocalist and mridangam player. He is the grand son of the great musician Omanakutty Amma.
