Chosen for honour by the Music Academy
The awardees: B. Krishnamoorthy
Apart from crowning a veteran as Sangita Kalanidhi, who will preside over the annual conference, the Music Academy confers titles on five artists, stalwarts in their chosen fields. This year’s Sangita Kalanidhi is Palghat Raghu, mridangam vidwan, who will be honoured at the sadas to take place on January 1, 2008. The other awardees are:
Sangita Kala Acharya
Trained from the age of five in bhajana Paddhati by Atmanatha Iyer and Tirukoshtiyur Iyengar of Ramanathapuram district, 75-year-old B. Krishnamoorthy came under the tutelage of brother B. Rajam at the age of ten. Besides lessons from Musiri Subramania Iyer, Tirupamburam N. Swaminatha Pillai and T. Brinda at the Central College of Carnatic Music, he also had special training under Mudicondan Venkatarama Iyer, Umayalpuram Rajagopala Iyer and T. Jayammal.

A polyglot, Krishnamoorthy is known for his vast research experience in music that has given him the advantage of a unique repertoire and an active involvement in several scholarly publications. A teacher of many years standing, his stints include a long tenure at the Music Academy’s Teacher’s College of Music. The Music Academy confers the title, Sangita Kala Acharya on him.
V Subrahmaniam displayed the ability to identify ragas even at the age of three. He began training in music under S. Sankara Iyer in 1951 and gave his first performance in 1953. In June 1956 he became a disciple of Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer, marking the beginning of a fruitful association that ended only with the passing away of the doyen in 2003.
He also learnt padams and javalis from T. Brinda. Qualifying with a Masters in Economics from Annamalai University, Subrahmaniam opted for a corporate career but retained an active interest in Carnatic Music.
A graded artiste of AIR from 1958, this true representative of the Semmangudi bhani has set to tune the compositions of the Sringeri Acharyas. A member of the Experts Committee of the Music Academy, he is a respected Guru today apart from holding teaching assignments at Kalakshetra and the Tamil Nadu Music College. The Music Academy confers the Sangita Kala Acharya on him.
TTK Memorial Award
Born on January 27, 1926, Seethalakshmi, as Seetha (Doraiswamy) was known, trained from the age of seven under P.S.Seetharama Bhagavatar and later enrolled herself at the Summer School of Indian Music run by P. Sambamurthy. She later learnt the jalatarangam from Ramaniah Chetty, one of the founding members of the Music Academy. She joined the Teachers College of Music run by the Music Academy and graduated from there in 1941, winning a gold medal.
She also learnt to play the veena, Suryanarayana Sastri being the guru. Although she was a regular AIR performer from a young age, Seetha Doraiswamy is best known for her jalatarangam concerts, presented in India and abroad, winning praise from audiences and the press.
Commending her efforts in keeping this rare art alive, the Music Academy confers the TTK Memorial Award for 2007 on her.
Born into a family of Kuchipudi artists (1936) in Kuchipudi village of Andhra Pradesh, Bhagavatalu Seetarama Sarma learnt music under Seetarama Anjaneyulu and later under Nethi Sreerama Sarma and T.R.Subramaniam at Vijayawada.
Seetarama Sarma
Joining Kalakshetra as lecturer in music in 1962 proved to be a turning point as he remained with the institution for decades composing music for several dance dramas.
Seetarama Sarma holds a diploma in Nattuvangam and is a specialist in the compositions of Mysore Vasudevachar. He has a vast repertoire of pada varnams, tana varnams, padams and javalis.
He founded Kalapeetham, an institution for teaching music and nattuvangam in 1985 and is also the principal of Sangeetha Gurukulam, Madras.
V. Subrahmaniam
He has set to music many verses including those of the Tamil poets, Subramania Bharati, Kamban and Kalidasa. The Music Academy is proud to present him the TTK Memorial Award.
Vaggeyakara Award
An economics graduate, Madurai G.S.Mani’s music lessons started at a very young age under his mother Sampoornam Ammal with Babu Iyengar and P.C.Sitarama Iyer continuing the good work.
His classical renderings are rich in raga, kriti and swara expositions.
He has been performing for AIR since 1950 and has produced several radio and television documentaries with music as the theme.
Seetha Doraiswamy
Mani’s career graph includes a bright and productive spell as he assisted M.S.Viswanathan compose music for films.
He has released several audio cassettes of devotional music and is well known for his lecture demonstrations on music, especially those which link classical music and films.
Widely honoured and feted, Mani has composed over 350 songs in the classical genre in Telugu, Sanskrit and Tamil. The Music Academy confers the Vaggeyakara Award on him this year.
