MELLIFLUOUS: Sheik Mehboob Subhani and Kaleesha bi Mehboob.

The Music Academy concerts kicked off to a bright start with the nagaswaram recital of Sheik Mehboob Subhani and his wife Kaleesha bi Mehboob on Sunday morning .

The Mohana varnam set the mood for the day followed by Tulsiram’s ‘Bhaja Manasa’ in Bahudari (Adi). Dikshitar’s ‘Akilandeswari’ (Dvijavanthi-Adi) was well rendered, bringing out the devotional fervour of the kriti.

The pair alternating between mandhra and madhyama sthayi produced a scintillating effect. Kaleesha’s Kalyani alapana was mellifluous with spuritamatic and viraladi sangatis. Sheikh complemented her with his rakti phrases. The brief silence between phrases made it sublime.

‘Nidichala Sukhama’ (Tyagaraja-Mishra Chapu) at a very sedate pace was a delight. The luscious niraval and kalpanaswaras that followed spoke volumes of the pair’s belief in pure music.

The end pieces consisted of Rajaji’s ‘Kurai Ondrum Illai’ (Kadayanallur Venkataraman), Bharthiar’s ‘Chinnanchiru Kiliye Kannamma’ (C.R.Subbaraman), Lalgudi’s Maand Tillana and a Tiruppugazh. Thanjavur Govindarajan (special tavil) and M.N.Shankar (tavil) played with absolute control to add rhythmic colour to the duo’s concert.
