NUNGAMBAKKAM CULTURAL ACADEMY
Of a high standard

An off-beat raga would have livened up OST’s recital.

O.S.Thiagarajan.
Performing for the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy, O.S.Thiagarajan presented as major offerings Kalyani, Begada and Bhairavi. While all the three were truly of a very high standard, there was no novelty in the concert.
An artiste as senior and gifted as OST need not resort to such a ‘safe course.’
An off-beat raga would have introduced an element of variety into the concert.
Kalyani (“Birana brova” of Tyagaraja) came with swaras at the conventional spot, “nee pada pankajamu.”
Begada was taken up for elaborate treatment. It came out well and the artist appeared to derive encouragement from his own good performance to provide more time to the alapana.
“Kadaikkan Vaithennai” followed, but there was nothing much to write home about.
A long sequence of swaras, lasting several tens of tala cycles (just like OST!) came up and made for a good listening.
The main piece was Bhairavi (“Upacharamu”).
The alapana, niraval (at “kapata”) and swaras were all neat.
Violinist V.V.Ravi and mridangist K..V.Prasad were at home and had no difficulty in providing adequate support to the singer.
