Drawing patterns

Talking about the idiosyncrasies of rasikas, last year there was this person who was writing Sriramajayam as the concert was in progress. This year this scribe was really surprised by the old man sitting next to him drawing a few kolams of Srichakram. Margazhi is associated with kolam. It is common to find women, at the break of dawn drawing beautiful patterns. Some learn and practise for this purpose. But a man engaged in this task? In a sabha hall? Strange.

Listening with gestures


It is normal to find vocalists getting into wild gestures when performing. Some musicians just cannot sing without stretching out their arms. Some get lost and the facial expressions are a feast for the cartoonist. But it is a little odd when a rasika takes to such mannerisms. This person almost hit his neighbour in the next seat with his swaying arms. He didn’t seem to hear the protests from rows behind as his vigorously nodding head obstructed the view.

Musician’s appeal

It was really heart rending - the appeal Sowmya made to the youngsters who had assembled at the Government Music College, when she was asked to utter those customary few words towards the end of her concert. The audience consisted mainly of students, who were pursuing music at the college. And her appeal was quite unequivocal — even after you leave the precincts of this Academy, you should never ever forget “ this great music” (Indha Uyarndha Isai). She added that each one of the
