Plucky display

Papanasam Ashok Ramani.
Papanasam Ashok Ramani’s vocal concert was featured on the evening of December 17, instead of Maharajapuram Ramachandran’s. Ashok Ramani had to exert deliberate control to keep to the swara stanas. Going beyond madhya stayi panchama appeared arduous. Karvais, especially on the tara stayi shadjam, wasn’t possible but he was able to manage a fast pace and execute brighas.Raga essays sans karvai lack wholesomeness and naturally the sangatis are repetitive.
In spite of the severe voice challenge, Ashok Ramani’s two-and-a-half hour concert was a plucky display. After an alapana of Varali he took up his grandfather Papanasam Sivan’s composition, ‘Ka Va Va’.
‘Kalikiyunte Gada,’ the Adi tala kriti of Tyagaraja, was rendered with niraval and kalapanaswaras. In the latter half of the charanam thani avartanam followed. Pravin’s fingering and playing technique are quite good and one wonders why he should not pay more attention to the tuning of the instrument. Purushotaman’s mature handling of the kanjira bolstered the thani.
It was indeed a bold step on Ashok Ramani’s part to have taken up Khambodi raga. Ragamalika kalpanaswaras for the pallavi were in Kanada, Valaji and Kapi. As an extension of Kapi, he took up a viruttam. Being an experienced violinist, M.A. Sundareswaran, gave appropriate support to the vocalist. In his own interest Ashok Ramani should pay more attention to the sahitya of the songs.
