Bhargavi Gopalan.
Bhargavi Gopalan is good looking and has an attractive stage presence. Beginning her afternoon recital with a Sivaashtakam set in Hamsadhwani and Talamalika, Swati Thirunal’s Ragamalika composition ‘Pannagendrasayana’ in Rupaka Tala, was taken up in place of the traditional varnam. There were some occasional good ‘Araimandis,’ which has become a rarity these days. It was a strain-free presentation. A dancer naturally needs to take rest in between such a long piece, but it should not be made to appear obvious. Bhargavi made good use of the space.
Post varnam segment had ‘Sakhire’ in Suddhasarang Raga, the Kapi Javali ‘Parullannamata’ and ‘Kannan Varuginra Neram’ in folk tune by Oothukkadu Venkatakavi. This last piece exuded a sense of merriment. Bhargavi’s abhinaya was passable.
All the chosen items were of the same theme of the heroine yearning for the hero making it a little tiresome to watch. One could not help wondering if good looks and tasteful costumes alone would make good dance. Tightness and briskness were missing. The recital concluded with the Tilang tillana.
Bhargavi had commendable support from T.K.Maheswar, vocal, Kalaiarasan on the violin, Viswanathan on the mridangam and nattuvangam by Srirangjitababu. Guru K.J.Sarasa sat behind the group and offered moral support.
