MUSIC MATTERS

Record of sorts

Photo: V. Ganesan

It was a record of sorts for AIR Chennai on Sunday at The Music Academy. As usual, the officers were preparing for the live relay of Ravikiran’s chitraveena recital at 4.15 p.m. Normally, BSNL lines are used for transmitting signals from the site. Encountering certain problems around 3 p.m., superintending engineer R.Venugopal and station engineer M. Vasuki, coming out of their weekly holiday along with their staff, swung into action. Braving the traffic jam, they brought the DSNG van (like the OBC van for TV) to the Academy and set it up in time. Due to this initiative, FM Gold listeners were in for a high clarity audio treat. AIR Chennai is the first station in South India to transmit a classical concert using the DSNG van, given to them by AIR Directorate.

Busy Sunday

It might have been the stretch-and-relax Sunday for many. But if you had watched the proceedings at NKT National High School, near Ice House, on December 2, you would have been forced to take a second look at your calendar. One was witness to an event of noble and lofty intentions, where children of various age groups were invited to participate in competitions and their choice — Thiruppugazh, Thevaram, Divya Prabhandham, Kandar Anuboodhi and the compositions of Suddhanadha Bharathi. The children were divided into five groups.

The judges invariably included a laya expert and another of quiet erudition, who jointly endeavoured to bring the best out of the participants. And believe it! There were as many as 322 participants, some of them did take part in more than one category, and 92 prizes are to be awarded. The function is to be held on January 5 next, at Arupadai Veedu Thirukkoil, Besant Nagar. Siruvapuri Murugan Abhishegha Kuzhu, an outfit at Royapettah, has been conducting these competitions for the past 21 years and one is given to understand that the popular classical singers of today have participated in these competitions during their younger years.
