In the right proportion

Vijay Siva’s method of rendering was refreshing and the team as a whole impressed the audience.

Right Gait: Vijay Siva

Vijay Siva is a seasoned vocalist, having been on the concert platform for almost a score of years, well groomed under vidwan D.K.Jayaraman. He commenced his concert with a Kanada raga, Adi tala varnam, ‘Nera Nammithi’ of Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar. He was accompanied by Mullaivasal Chandramouli on the violin and Manoj Siva on the mridangam and Sundar Kumar on the kanjira.

Instead of the common practice of rendering the pallavi, anupallavi and mukthayee swaram in two speeds, Vijay Siva did the pallavi in the slow tempo, the anupallavi in the second tempo and the mukthayee swaras in tisra gathi, then rejoining the pallavi in the first tempo. This method was quite refreshing as the time taken for handling the whole thing in the first and second and tisra gathi, one after the other, was saved and the possibility of the audience tiring thereon was avoided. ‘Sobillu Saptaswara’ in Jaganmohini, Rupaka talam of Tyagaraja was the following piece with niraval in the first line of the charanam. ‘Dhara Rig Sama Dhulato’ and kalpanaswaras at the second word of the pallavi were pleasantly handled. After a raga essay of Saranga, Siva followed by the violinist, a Tyagaraja kriti ‘Emidova’ set to Adi talam which is not often heard on concerts was presented with kalpanaswaras. Unlike the usual Tyagaraja kriti pattern, the charanam of this kriti was packed with sahityam in madhyama kala tempo.

Manji is a raga much akin to Bhairavi and the distinction can be brought out only by handling the raga correctly. ‘Brovavamma’ in this raga in misra chapu tala of Syama Sastri is a composition that brings out both the sahitya and the raga bhava in full measure.

Siva took up the alapana of Khambodi which was handled with the right gait. After rendering an appropriate viruttam on Lord Siva, Gopalakrishna Bharati’s composition, ‘Thiruvadi Charanam,’ in Adi talam was the choice and Siva started it from the anu pallavi. This is a grand composition in this raga which is rich in lyrical content and being a Tamil song has an enhanced emotional appeal. This composition is in the rounds in most kutcheris this year. Niraval at ‘Aduthu Vanda Ennai’ in the charanam was as usual taken up with kalpanaswaras.

It is normally found that artists choose this as the sub-main in a concert but lose the sense of time and in the process end up almost with a short 15 minutes left for them to handle a scheduled Ragam, Thanam, Pallavi but Siva’s handling was quite appropriate. A rare Muthuswami Dikshitar song in Paras raga, Adi talam, ‘Chintaya Mahalinga Murthim,’ was the preceding piece to the Ragam, Thanam, Pallavi which was in Natabhairavi.

Natabhairavi has all the swaras of Shanmukhapriya save the madhyama swara; it has suddha madhyama and the Shanmukhapriya’s variant is prati madhyama. The alapana of Natabhairavi has to be handled meticulously so as to avoid any suggestion of the prati madhyama counterpart. The suddha madhyama has to be touched upon almost always to avoid any trespass. The phrasings of the other swaras of Natabhairavi should be built in with the right combination and gamakas. Vijay Siva scored fairly well on his count but he can surely enhance it to better levels. Violinist Chandramouli’s version was clearer.

After Thanam, the pallavi was in Adi talam, two kalai. ‘Paramaananda Natabhairaveesa Jagadeesa,’ the eduppu, was half beat after the first beat. Ragamalika swaras were taken up in Anandabhairavi and Bhairavi.

Appropriately, the thani avartanam was after the pallavi which was excellently handled by the duo. ‘Mathatha Bhartaenu’ of Bangalore Nagaratnamma in Khamas, set to misra chapu talam was the next piece. ‘Mudugara’ in Kurinji, set to Adi talam by Annamacharya, Ramalingswami’s ‘Thannai Arindhu’ in Maan, set to misra chapu talam followed. The concert came to a close with a Thirupugazh in Chakravakam, chatusra jampa talam. Overall, the concert left an impression that Vijay Siva and the team did well with the right sense of proportion in every aspect.
