Kapi ragam is a fertile field which provides a clever musician ample and more scope to play and also overplay, if one wants. R. Suryaprakash, the vocalist, knows to perform for the aficionados as well to amuse an average listener. He did not miss thi s opportunity and used his vocal and imaginary prowess to the hilt in delineating Kapi ragam for the famous Tyagaraja composition ‘Inta Sowkya.’ So it was presented as a blend of ‘sowkyam’ in some parts and razzmatazz in other regions.

The vakra swara prayogas always add extra charm to Kapi and Suryaprakash left no stone unturned to drive home his point that he needs approbation and applause. Well, he got it. That is the point.

With Thiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam on mridangam, should Suryaprakash need to worry about the moral and rhythmic bolstering? Here too he was the winner, because Bhaktavatsalam is also capable of soft, hard to thunder beats through his instrument. In addition, Bhaktavatsalam was generous to shower encomiums also on Suryaprakash on the stage for his versatility. The exhaustive niraval at ‘Swara Raga Laya Sudha Rasa Mando’ went on and on backed by an endless string of swara smartly woven to the ultimate ‘tani avartanam’ by Bhaktavatsalam and Srirangam Kannan on morsing for nearly 30 minutes of tala-vadya kutcheri. M.A. Sundareswaran on the violin took the cue and he also created phrases and notes ranging from funny to finer in nature.

The concert opened with majestic ‘Swaminatha Paripalaya’ in Nattai and pepped up further with Bilahari alapana and ‘Parithana Michithe’ with swara swirls at ‘Rokkami Chudakula.’ The tail piece of the concert was a long viruttam in ragamalika.
