Profound raga expositions

Sruti Sagar
J.B.Sruti Sagar is only in his teens but a lively, talented and confident performer on the flute waiting to take off. The instant appeal of his playing the instrument is its closeness to vocal singing which is many times a rarity in case of wind instruments. His expressions are completely devoid of the gymnastic trappings and idiosyncratic superfluities associated with the bamboo playing. His profundity in raga exposition is quite matured relating to his age and experience
; the awe-inspiring karvais, subtle infections to elicit the beauty of the raga, silken smooth glides, vibrant swirls and sweeps contribute to the high melodic content.
Sagar’s Bhairavi alapana was a remarkable essay on the finer and aesthetic dignity of the raga. ‘Lalithe Sripravrudda Sreemathi’ of Tyagaraja and his niraval at the charanam were conveyed with the responsibility of a seasoned performer.
Sagar’s swara spells were orderly and deployed calculated templates. They never ran wildly to finally land on a hasty korvai but moved at the right pace to culminate in a logical finale. Guided by Dr. Sundar, Sruti Sagar is a student of Mechanical Engineering and had his early lessons from flutist Bala Sai. Sagar’s accompanying artists also belong to the same age group; Mathematics student R .Raghul on the violin complimented Sruti Sagar perfectly and also proved in every way that he is the disciple of veteran violinist M. Chandrasekaran. N.C.Bharadwaj, another frail youth on the mridangam pitched in with the rhythm in right proportions.
