KARTIK FINE ARTS

Aggressive

O.S.Arun

It was a light fare marked by aggressive outbursts that O.S.Arun offered. The alapana of Hamsanadham, unusually of a long duration, was full of throaty akara and ukara phrases, inclined towards the Hindusthani. Even more pathetic was his referring to the lyrics while singing Tyagaraja’s ‘Bantureeti Goluviyyavayya Rama.’

Embar S. Kannan tried to do a balancing act in his delineation. The swaraprastaras were mere exercises up and down the scale. ‘Amba Krupai Thandu’ in Kapi (Adi) was just a fast paced rendition. The alapana of the main raga Natabhairavi failed to take off. Being a sampoorna raga, permutations and combinations were aplenty, but they were never tapped. It’s time Arun turns towards serious stuff to satisfy the rasika who pays to listen to classical music. J. Vaidyanthan (mridangam) and S.Karthik (ghatam) were the other accompaniments.
