MY FESTIVAL -- NEDUNURI KRISHNAMOORTHY
Festival has brought global recognition
The youth have the responsibility to take Carnatic music further
I have been singing at The Music Academy for the past 54 years. It went on without a break for 50 years and after a two year hiatus, I am performing again. I have performed in other Sabhas too. Carnatic music has attained a global recognition and the music festival has helped it attain this status. Festival means feast and joy for every rasika, education to music students and treasured moments to the vidvans where they showcase their vidwat.
The organisers in Chennai have to be commended for this feat of holding so many kutcheris and lec-dems within a fortnight for the cause of Carnatic music.
Music Academy has been a pioneering institution in this and its status is entirely different.
I belong to the previous generation when music was practised in its pristine form. I still remember those days where my seniors would churn out pure music. It was their upasana.
But the same cannot be said of today’s youngsters. No doubt their knowledge is incredible, but distractions like film music and other lighter varieties affect their classical pursuit. It might be even due to changing lifestyles.
The gnanam, the raga bhavam is found wanting. Their singing is pleasing to the ears but they are lacking ideals. Stalwarts of yore created their own style, rich in bhavam and showed dignity.
That the current generation is not looking seriously into the works of the Trinity which is the nectar of Carnatic music must be an important reason for the decline in standards.
The youth at the festivals are abundantly talented and have the responsibility to take Carnatic music further. Maintaining traditional values alone would help them in this endeavour. The music festival and Carnatic music in general cannot ignore the Trinity and attain perpetuity.
