Intricate footwork: Dancers depicting Saraswati on Hamsam.

Students of Sri Saraswathy Gana Nilayam turned the evening magical when they presented the ballet ‘Deiveega Vahanangal,’ at the Narada Gana Sabha. The ballet depicted, through a selection from the Hindu mythology the Hindu pantheon with their animal mounts (vahanas). The Nrittavandanam, a pancha raga thala maligai, was a group performance. It involved intricate footwork and the dancers have to be commended for a synchronised show.

Padmalaksshme Suresh, as the suthradhari narrated the episodes as the ballet moved on to the different vahanas. The first was the ‘Mooshika.’ The mouse was endearingly portrayed by Siva Shankari, a senior student of the Nilayam, with Binesh Madhavan playing Vigneswara. The peacock of Subramanya of course meant Sura Samharam. Set in the raga Shangmukhapriya and beginning with the lines “Devar Senapathi Murugan,” the scenes effectively brought out the fight between Murgan and Soorapadman. Here both Deepthi Swaroopini as Muruga and Binesh as Soorapadman maintained tala and tempo.

Garuda Vahanam.

In the Ayappan story which dealt with the tiger vahanam, Narmada, who appeared as Lord Ayyappa’s mother showed exceptional skill in abhinaya. Though Binesh Mahadevan had a role to play in all the episodes, he was at his best as Rattha Bhujananan, harassing the Devas. Padmini Krishnamurthy as Ambal wins him over before embracing the lion as her vahana. Binesh’s capability of delivering nritta and nritya came to the fore in the rishaba vahana episode. Endowed with a supple body, Aparna as Siva struck sculpturesque poses. And petite Padmini was apt for Saraswati, who favours the Hamsam. Set in Veenavahini raga and in thisra nadai, the song contained jatis delivered by a group. The dancers represented various musical instruments finally forming a perfect lotus. The other vahanas presented were the horse and garuda. The lyrics for these two were set in ragas Desh and Karnaranjani respectively. The presentation concluded with a tillana - a racy piece of intricate rhythmical patterns danced to chatusra ragamalika and pancha tala malika. The dancers showed great stamina in making kaleidoscopic patterns.

Radha Badri’s scintillating voice added lustre to the colourful presentation. While excellent percussion support was given by A.N.Bhagyalakshmi and Nellai D. Kannan, Srinivasan matched them with his perfect bowing on the violin. The lyrics were penned by H. Vaidyanathan.
