NARADA GANA SABHA

Sung with gusto

Pradeep Kumar

Pradeep Kumar never wishes to imitatively traverse a path rehearsed and chartered elsewhere and hence his creativity is of a unique genre. He is also known to be daringly swara-friendly and his avartanam-fitting combinations of swaras were all sung with gusto for ‘Jaya Jaya’ (Nattai-Purandaradasa) and ‘Sarasamukhi’ (Gowdamalhar-Harikesanallur).

While Varali (‘Mamava Meenakshi’-Dikshitar) was at a rewarding languid pace, the Lalgudi Kshethra krithi, ‘Lalithe Sri Pravrudhe’ in Bhairavi, one felt, needed to be rendered in its customary non-negotiable kalapramanam.

The alapana had skilfully managed phrases that had varying sets to put the raga in its majestic perspective. ‘Pibare Rama Rasam’ and ‘Sogasujoodatharama’ (Kannadagowlai-Tyagaraja) were his other choices.

Akkarai Swarnalatha’s playing told the story that she is brimming with confidence and would soon become due for reckoning as an ace performer. Madurai Sundar did accompany with reasonable competence but bungled with the final ardhi to be sympathetically rescued by Pradeep. This again was a mini hall noon concert that had all chairs occupied — inspirational data for the artists and Carnatic music too.

Pradeep Kumar deserves to be given a two-and-a-half hour slot to unleash his potential.
