Lakshmi Rangarajan
Lakshmi Rangarajan was accompanied on the violin by Vittal Ramamurthy, Manoj Siva on the mridangam and N. Narasimhan on the ghatam. The concert opened with the Sahana (Adi) varnam of Tiruvottiyur Thyagaraja. Walajapettai Venkatramana Bhagavathar’s composition, ‘Guru’ (Anandabhairavi) in praise of his guru was served with kalpananswaram.
‘Ninnu Nera Namminanura’ (Pantuvarali, Rupaka) with a raga alapana and swaraprasthara was neat.
Prefaced by a short effective alapana of Yadukulakhambodi, the Adi Tala composition of Tyagaraja was refreshing. This composition is not much in vogue now.
‘Bhogeendra Sayeenam’ was an effective medium-tempo filler after the slower Yadukulakambhodi kriti.
Muthuswami Dikshitar’s ‘Mahaganapathim’ (Thodi, Rupaka) is a majestic piece that deserves a central place rather than as a starter. After a matching Thodi raga alapana Lakshmi presented the song well, with kalpanaswarams for the opening lines of the pallavi with kuraippu. Manoj Siva’s tani exhibited virtuosity evidencing his mentor Palghat Raghu’s style.
After ‘Mal Maruga’ (Vasantha, Adi), the main ragam of was taken up for ragam tanam pallavi.
Any hesitancy observed until then vanished making Lakshmi’s Kharaharapriya was wholesome. Perhaps to achieve modulation, Lakshmi tries to muffle the voice slightly, especially in the upper reaches, which should be avoided.
She is endowed with a good voice and open-throated presentation would be the best.
The pallavi was in Khanta Jati Triputa talam “Muruganai Guhanai Ninai Nee – Mal Maruganai Saravananai.”
The pallavi was a smooth sail with Ragamalika swarams. The concert drew to a close with Kalyanagopalam of Narayana Tirtha and a Tillana in Chenchurati (Desadi).
