Refreshing Bilahari

Vijay Siva.
Music was the theme of the first two compositions in the concert of Vijay Siva, namely ‘Nadatanumanism’ in Siddharanjani and ‘Vidulaku’ in Mayamalavagowla. The latter was embellished with some lively swaraprastara. The Begada raga delineation by Vijay Siva had some rare sangatis.
Lalgudi Viajaylakshmi on the violin also came out with a convincing alapana. The rendition of ‘Sankari Ni’ was neat. After the Kiravani kriti ‘Ambavani,’ Kalyani raga was dealt with in detail touching all the relevant nuances by both Siva and Vijayalakshmi. The chosen song was ‘Nambikettavar Illavo’ with niraval and swaras for the anupallavi ‘Ambujanavana.’ From here Vijay Siva dwelt mostly above the Madhyasthayi aided by a clear voice.
The main item was a refreshing Bilahari beginning with a sloka followed with a moving alapana. For the next kriti ‘Kamakshi Varalakshmi,’ the kalpanaswaras for the pallavi had some attractive combinations.
The mridangam accompaniment was provided by Neyveli Narayanan. His fingers at times seemed to play the song itself. His thani was made very appealing with intelligent and attractive sound variations on the two sides of the instrument.
Apart from the earlier ‘Palayamam Brihadheeswara’ in Nayaki, a composition by Muthuswami Dikshitar, towards the end, Siva rendered Bharathiar’s poem in Ragamalika touching Kapi, Dhanyasi and Mohanam followed by ‘Vetri Ettu Dikkum,’ perhaps as a homage to the poet on his death anniversary.
Then came ‘Thillaisthalam Enru’ by Gopalakrishna Bharathi in Sama, a Chenjurutti song ‘Thammaiye Pugazhndu’ and ‘Brahmagadikina’ in Mukhari.
