Soulful rendition
Sanjay Subramaniam began his concert with the Hindola varnam and moved on to a rare Tyagaraja kriti ‘Valagadana’ in Harikhambodi. Four ragas Pantuvarali, Sahana, Saveri and Suddhadanyasi were elaborated in depth exploring the varied possibilities of their beauty and majesty. He was in such good form that evening that he and his music seemed to become a single entity. M.R.Gopinath on the violin won the appreciation of the audience by being equally good in his t
urn. Pantuvarali had some Hindustani touches too. The kriti ‘Siva Siva Siva’ had niraval and swaras at ‘Agamamula.’
After the soulful alapana of Sahana, the song ‘Emanadichevo’ followed without any appendage. It was an unfamiliar song ‘Devi Pavane’ in Saveri. After the niraval the kalpanaswaras were elaborate. Some repetitive combinations like ‘Pa pa da pa’ had a comic element but a lot of striking ‘kanakku’ too. Though singing mainly in Chatusragati, Sanjay varied it with Tisram and Kandam often catching everyone unawares. It appeared from the way he played on the mridangam that Sathishkumar could also sing. His support contributed to the success of the concert. He was ably assisted by Srirangam Kannan on the morsing. Their thani was in keeping with the general tenor of the programme.
After a quickfire ‘Innamum Thamadamen’ in Devamanohari, Sanjay ventured into Ragam, Tanam and Pallavi and rendered a brilliant alapana of Suddhadanyasi. The pallavi was set to Chatusra Triputa with eduppu at 1.5 idam. The tala manipulation was interesting in the main raga as well as the Ragamalika.
