Ranganatha Sharma
A promising talent, C.R.Ranganatha Sharma commenced his recital with the popular Khanta Jati Ata Thala Bhairavi varnam, Viribhoni of Pachimiriyam Adiappaiyar as a warming up exercise. Ambi Dikshitar’s Adi Thala Gowlai Raga ‘Gananathaya’ and a Begada kriti in Adi Thalam of Koteeswar Iyer ‘Easan Kanakasabesan’ being a rakthi raga set the fine mood of the concert.
Hamsanandhi was the sub-main raga, dealt with at length competently. Placement of this raga early in the kutcheri format was a novel idea.
‘Sachamara Ramavani’ of Muthaiah Bhagavatar (Rupaka) was impressive.
Tyagaraja’s Devamanohari kriti set to Adi Thalam, ‘Neekelara’ came out vibrantly. Ranaganatha Sharma anchored on Khambodi next. The raga produced great Vishranthi, the singer in no hurry. It showed Sharma’s highly sophisticated gnanam to deal with all the prayogas and a grand edifice of the raga was built step by step. ‘Evari Mata’ was rendered with passion.
Niraval at “Bhakta Paradeena,” kuraippu swarams and the Thani followed later.
Every note in the ‘mel kala swara prastharas’ had the perfect Khambodi flavour.
With just 23 minutes to spare for the closure of the concert the Ragam, Thanam, Pallavi (Shanmukapriya) was taken up.
Perhaps Ranganatha Sharma got too immersed in the Khambodi. Being a Prati Madhyama Raga, Shanmugapriya added colour and contrast to the concert.
The rendition was absolutely classical, frivolous sangatis studiously avoided. The pallavi “Rajarajeshwari Tripurasundari Rajamathangimaam Pahi” was set in Adi Thalam, Khanta Nadai. Neelakanta Sivan’s ‘Theruvadu Eppo’ (Khamas, Adi) was sung with intense feeling.
The violinist Madurai Balasubrahmaniam lent little support to the vocalist. Konerirajapuram Varadharajan (mridangam), however, had some good patches.
It was music of high quality throughout. Sharma’s music has depth, is bhava-oriented and is not without punch and vigour. He is one artist worth watching in years to come.
