NAADHALAYA
Penchant for the off-beat
J. A. Jayanth
Teenager J.A.Jayanth’s Purvikalyani had the weight of a veteran’s. Never too fast, his exposition of the raga was deep and leisurely, with the phrases of the alapana almost of equal length. Apparently, Jayanth’s grandfather and guru, T.S.Sankaran, flautist and disciple of flute Mali, has taught him to respect the mood of a raga. Akkarai Swarnalatha on the violin gave an equally good presentation.
Jayanth chose to play Poochi Iyengar’s ‘Paramapavana Rama,’ a composition that has become rare. Jayanth’s mastery over his art was clearly evident early on in the concert when he played Tyagaraja’s ‘Makelara Vicharamu’ (Ravichandrika). The swaras that followed the kirtana were a beauty. Jayanth seems to have a penchant for off-beat ragas. He presented Vijayashree (Vara Narada), Garudadhwani (Tatvameruga) and Kalanidhi (Chinna Nata Na) — all the three of Tyagaraja.
Another teenager, N.C.Bharadwaj was on the mridangam and he too provided mature and commendable support to the flautist.
