Music matters - I
Sanjay’s Vasantham
P.B. Srinivas, omnipresent with his turban and other paraphernalia that go with him, appeared on stage after Sanjay’s three-hour-plus-concert at Mudhra, and said this of Sanjay: “Here is a person who enjoys his music and makes others enjoy it too. I was in tears when ‘Manadhirkugandhadhu’ was sung”. PBS too, during his ‘Kalangalil Aval Vasantham’ days must have thoroughly enjoyed his own music as he presented it to others. The tear glands would also have been set in motion as the song began and would have continued even after it ended. So, was PBS looking at himself through the Sanjay mirror?
Collar mikes
A question to the technical and sound engineer wizards: do the vocalists still have to depend on the pole and the ball mike that effectively blocks the face of the artist? Collar mikes are being used in lectures as it helps the person to move around and speak. In television interviews also there are no mikes. Is it difficult to provide a powerful collar mike, with some slim magnifier, for the singing artist?
Poor infrastructure
It has been repeatedly commented that the audience at music halls comprises senior citizens. Hats off to them because it is love of Carnatic music that makes them sit through concerts in spite of several inconveniences. For instance, the unfriendly plastic chair, which are found in most of the halls. The tube lights some times flicker causing irritation. If the fans are situated below, the blades cut the light in the most annoying way.
