A.K.C. Natarajan
Clarionet vidvan A.K.C. Natarajan is the Sangitha Kalanidhi designate of The Music Academy Madras for the year 2008. He will be conferred the title on January 1 at the Sadas.
AKC, as he is popularly known, is the son of noted clarionet vidwan A.K. Chinnikrishna Naidu. Initially, he learnt vocal music under Alathur Venkateswara Iyer. Later, he learnt nagaswaram from Elupur Natesa Pillai. AKC chose to specialise in the western instrument and practised for several hours to adapt it to Carnatic music.
Cherished title
His proficiency in the instrument fetched Natarajan a job with AIR, Kozhikode, in 1949. At AIR Delhi, he was part of Pandit Ravishankar’s orchestra. He cherishes the title “Clarionet Everest” bestowed on him by the nagaswaram legend T.N. Rajaratnam Pillai. A regular performer at The Music Academy right from the mid-Fifties, AKC has played in other sabhas too during the December season.
An ardent devotee of Bhagawan Satya Sai Baba, AKC has the unique distinction of organising the annual Vidhwa Maha Sabha for three consecutive years in Tiruchi as the secretary of Satya Seva Samithi, Tiruchi, during the early 1960s. He was actively associated with the Tiruvaiyaru Sri Thyaga Brahma Sabha organising the annual event. His life time achievements and methodology formed the subject of research by Prof. Williams of Disney University under a fellowship given by the University. He has been honoured with several titles and awards by many sabhas and organisations both in India and abroad. He is the asthana vidvan of Kanchi Sankara Mutt, Andavan Mutt and Sringeri mutt apart from many other adheenams such as Tiruvavaduthurai, Dharmapuram and Tirupanandhal.
