Social decadence

MATHEW V. KUZHUVELIL

Lesbigayism is the behavioural pattern of libertines. To the libertine it may be natural, but not for others. It is an exceptional sexual behaviour developed due to various psycho-biological factors like inherent inclinations or abuse by others. Homosexual relations have to be recognised sympathetically. Society has a responsibility to provide therapeutic facilities such as psychotherapy, behaviour therapy, etc. Sodomy, Zoophilia, lesbianism, promiscuity, incest and other sexual deviations are as old as humanity itself, and seldom regarded as normal behaviour. Here we may recall the decline of the powerful empires in the past testifying that sexual anarchy was one of the obvious symptoms of a decaying society. The normal way of continuing the human species is through heterosexual intercourse, fulfilling a natural urge in a responsible manner. Rape, adultery, paedophilia and lascivious sexual behaviour come under irresponsible action. Sexual relation with mutually consenting adults is legally regarded as responsible behaviour, a view which need not be acceptable to many, since it does not take into account their responsibility to others in the family and community.

Individual and society

Lesbigayism, a vigorous topic among the younger generation is being advocated and encouraged on the basis of human rights. Human rights is to maintain human dignity, not only of the present generation, but of posterity as well. Sex is not merely meant for the pleasure of those who are involved. It has a wider social spectrum, visualising the continuity of the human species.

The world has begun to feel the pinch of the irresponsible permissive sexual behaviour rampant in urban societies. Some countries have already awakened to arrest this dangerous human malady. In a secular democratic social set-up, we may argue for individual freedom.

The individual then becomes the criterion for social morality. Such a society fails to control individual actions that may threaten the social fabric. Secularism in the West is devoid of religious faith and is free from religious influence. In India, ‘secular’ does not mean being irreligious. It affirms and respects various religious faiths. All religions and their adherents are treated equally before the law. Our Constitution does not warrant any wanton behaviour that may adversely affect social life. Since a majority of Indians have a religious bent of mind, the sexual behaviour of the Western secular influenced group may have to wait to get wider public sanction.

A human being is created with an intelligence to act as homo-sapiens i.e., to discern and decide diligently. Once we reject this supreme responsibility it may sound the death knell of a sound humanity. Humanity is called to uphold individual dignity and to lay a strong foundation for the up-building of a healthy, human community.
