Retraction

The article headlined " Our farmers are dying, to hell with the World Cup ", by Narendra Shekhawat (Open Page, April 24, 2011) is hereby withdrawn as it was not the product of his original work, a requirement of articles published on that page. The content of the article including facts, figures, examples and even stories like the one on "Nero's Guests" was drawn from the speeches and articles of The Hindus Rural Affairs Editor P. Sainath. Several of these were from articles that have appeared in The Hindu. Mr. Shekhawat has expressed his "heartfelt, honest apologies" for failing to credit him, saying he "was very moved" on hearing Mr. Sainath speak (after the screening of the documentary Nero's Guests) in Bangalore and was inspired "to spread the message to as many people as possible."
