VASTHUSCAPE

The importance of correct calculations

MANOJ S. NAIR

How certain calculations are important in the design of building as per Vasthu.

DIRECTION-WISE: A north-facing house.

Some Vasthu consultants may sometimes give unnecessary emphasis to many things that might not have much to do with the core issue. They might ignore the most important mathematical proportions and calculations related to this sastra either due to ignorance or negligence. The mathematical calculations are mainly related to the perimeter of a house, which is directly based on the direction of orientation of the building.

An architect or an engineer must be very much aware about the direction of orientation of the building, size of the plot, position of road, proximity of energy sources, nearby structures, etc. while designing a residential building. The birth star of the client is also very important, astrologically. The size and shape of building has to be formulated based on the above factors along with the requirement of client and his financial capability.

Eight directions

`Yoni' of a house is a Vasthu term representing the life of a building. Dwaja Yoni, Dhooma Yoni, Simha Yoni, Kukkura Yoni, Vrishabha Yoni, Khara Yoni, Gaja Yoni and Vayasa Yoni are the eight Yonis for eight directions starting with a building facing west. Out of this Dhooma Yoni, Kukkura Yoni, Khara Yoni and Vayasa Yoni are not at all auspicious for any building and need to be avoided for calculations.

Dwaja Yoni is the range of perimeter meant for building on the eastern side of the Ankanom, which means for a building facing west. Similarly Simha Yoni is for a building facing north, Vrishabha Yoni for a building facing east and Gaja Yoni for a building facing south. Dwaja Yoni is considered to be very good in fulfilling the wishes of the inmates, as it is associated with Lord Brihaspathy, `sathwik' quality and the Brahmin caste. This is mainly for `Kizhakkini,' but can be used for all directions.

`Simha Yoni' is the one used for `Thekkini' with Venus as the Lord associated with it. This is of `Thamasik' nature, and is associated with the Kshathriya caste and will provide immense wealth. The measurement mentioned for a building facing south must be one with Lord Budha as the associated deity and linked to which is the Vaisya caste. Vrishabha Yoni is one with Saturn as the associated Lord, of Thamasik quality and its association is with the Sudra caste. Dhooma Yoni will increase fear, Kukkura Yoni may increase conflict, Kharayoni contributes to tentativeness and Vayasa Yoni will end up in the destruction of one's own family.

prabhoo: Mruthyurvvajya :

Sarvavyapathu prapyathee

smin gruheethee.

(Manushyalaya Chandrika)

The above sloka categorically states that `Yoni ` is the life of a house and one must choose the respective Yonis for building according to the direction in which it faces. `Mruthyu' defect must be avoided for all structures during the design process. This may bring about complications in many ways. In the same way the dimensions of rooms must also be arrived at.

A building facing other than four cardinal directions is violating the first principle of Vasthu and the effect of living in such building is disastrous as per the sastra. The perimeter of the outside wall/utharam, perimeter of outside eve boards, perimeter of outside of Padukam and perimeter of Ankanom (in the case of Nalukettu), etc. have to be very auspicious and should never come in the Mruthyu region.
