Costly affair: Following the construction boom, the prices of timber are also on a steady rise. -

The frenzied pace at which the construction activity in the city and suburbs has redefined the contours has also left the prices of almost all construction material registering a steady rise in the last couple of years.

When the land price can go and that of cement, steel and sand start climbing, will the timber stop following them? Though not that conspicuous in recent times, the wood work too has turned dear adding to the overall construction costs.

Estimates suggest that prices of almost every variety of the wood used in buildings for doors, windows and cabinets have risen by around 40 per cent. Based on quality, the rise varies and the better the teak variant, that much more higher the escalation has been, say the timber depot managers.

Indian teak is now available in a range of Rs.1,850 to Rs.4,000 per cubic feet based on the variety and those keen on good material will have to be prepared to pay Rs.2,500 and above for every cft of the teak.

The Burma teak price too has gone up and the rise has been considerable. Now good Burma teak means anywhere above Rs.3,000 and above per cft.

Among other variants, the African teak can be procured in the range of Rs.1,700 per cft and above. Timber depot staff says though there is no big shortage of teak as such, there are just enough stocks to meet the demand and any sharp rise could result in the scarcity pushing the rates further.

The material is broadly available in three categories of medium, best and commercial.

The increase is also attributed to the rise in the transport costs, which play a major role in deciding the teak prices.

The timber depots maintain that the prices too could be checked to a large extent if the government works out a way to ease the taxes.
