Trendy: Textured and designer paint finishes require the services of a specially-trained painter.

It is touted as the latest revolution in wall covering after the pre-mixed paint in a can. Textured and designer finishes are appealing to a large number of builders and home owners in the city.

Textured finishes offer a markedly different look with rustic or modern appeal to give life to a wall. They can help hide wall imperfections and ugly blemishes by adding texture. Textured paint enables you to create the effect of plaster or stucco on walls. Whether used for carefully selected accents or whole rooms, it adds elegance and beauty to the interiors.

Wide variety

Textured wall coatings come in a variety of finishes and colours. There are several popular effects that have evolved over the years. Some can be created to give a stucco effect, others contain aggregates to offer a rough sand texture. The popcorn effect is achieved by using a spray gun to create a granular surface.

A custom colour can be mixed or the base white can be painted after it is dry. Special texture roller, coarse brush, putty knife or trowel is used to apply textured paint on the desired surface. A special texture roller has sponge-like voids that pull the thick paint off the wall, creating the relief in the painted surface.

Designer finishes on the other hand, can create the visual effect of a natural material like wood, marble or leather or a flaming surface to match the occupants’ taste. Stencils with gold or silver paints can give a different appearance to the wall. The choices are virtually endless and the results can be stunning when done right.

Deck up the walls

Textured finishes currently available in the market can be used to deck up the exteriors as well as interiors. The latest products also offer anti fungal, anti algal properties. According to S.Vijayakumar, paint system consultant, textured finishes are basically emulsion-based polymers that can be used on concrete, plastered or wooden board surfaces. Different application techniques are used to create a variety of patterns.

Textured finishes have the advantage of masking cracks on the wall. The elastic property of the finish covers cracks up to 1.4 mm.

Some versions are reinforced with coarse, rock-hard aggregates that help to conceal small irregularities and indents on the surface of the wall. They are applied on a base coat. Textured paint can provide a rich, earthy appearance.

Jotun Paints has a whole range of designer finishes to lend special effects to the interiors.

Says store head Muraleedharan: “It is possible to achieve a dazzlingly dramatic effect depending on the choice of colour and technique.” To achieve a broken colour effect, one or more colours are applied in layers over an undercoat.

To create an illusion of depth, the painter can use a sponge or rag to apply lighter colours on a darker basecoat. A wet sponge can also be used to absorb some of the surface colour, exposing the different colour of the basecoat, creating a crumbly, hard effect. Colour washing is another technique used for a more defined texture effect.

Marbling

Marbling is a different technique to create various shapes and patterns by controlling the direction of brush strokes. If you want a surface bursting to life with swerving lines, go for the flaming effect with waves rising slightly or above the surface of the wall. Colours can be used to create the impression of a raging fire, stormy sea or a forest.

Some of the equipment used for designer finishes include special effect rollers, sea sponge, plastic bags and stencil brush.

However, textured and designer paint finishes require the services of a specially-trained painter. Most of the dealers in these types of finishes offer training courses for painters.

Another type of textured wall finish is available as a fibre coat in the form of sheets in different patterns.
