Bright and beautiful: Designer lighting at Home town in Hyderabad. -
Designer craze is enveloping every aspect of contemporary urban life. The fad that began with apparel and jewellery has now spread to home and interior settings also. The affluence of Information Technology is proving to be the breeding ground for the current renaissance in people’s tastes and fashions.
With people’s choice being guided more by novelty than by any other aspect, creativity is now ruling the roost. Designers are quick to exploit the situation by turning each mundane aspect of existence into a poetic experience.
The best prey of the designer bug on the home front is none other than the lighting segment. Now it is the designers who say ‘Let there be light…’
“We offer designer lighting packaged as a collection of different fixtures of similar design. The collection may include ceiling lamp, wall-mounted lamp, desk lamps and floor-mounted lamp.
This brings harmony into a setting,” says Venu G. Vedula, the Unit Head of Home Town at Punjagutta.
Unlimited varieties
And the collections are mind boggling in variety. Conventional models such as crystal chandeliers and lamps using special Egyptian crystals are available within the price range of Rs.6,000 to Rs.36,770. A spiral-shaped one from Gluten Licht that has crystals strung by copper wires around the source of light will increase the illumination by hundred fold and hence is the priciest of all. Equally gorgeous though smaller in size is the one with twisted pieces of glass in place of crystals which costs Rs.26,690.
Lamp shades in various shapes created by simple means of twisted metal wires is getting quite popular among the lovers of designer lamps, says Mr.Vedula.
The wire can assume shapes ranging from those of flower pots, Christmas stars, hanging baskets and many such.
Another big hit with the customers is the Italian lamp shade which has silver textured fabric stitched with metal chips hanging loose over the source of light. Costing about Rs.4,000, it is a must-have for those craving for novelty.
However, contemporary models with defined shapes gain an edge on the whole.
“The whole idea behind designer illumination is to show the light and hide the source,” explains Mr.Vedula.
Kids range
Hiding the source can be done in many creative ways. Looking at the kids’ range, one has to agree that the designers have been able to achieve much more than what they set out to do. Here the lamp shades assume all kinds of fancy shapes that human mind can imagine such as dolphins, penguins, birds, moon, Barbie dolls, soft toys, motor bikes, cars and many others.
Children’s range from ‘Massive’ has exclusive soft coloured shades made of fabric. Another attraction is in the wall mounted domes with pictures of favourite comic characters.
“Children’s range has great variety as parents go to any extent for their darlings. And even kids are getting very choosy these days,” says Amrit, the sales executive at the showroom.
And why not, when they have a whole array of designers pandering to their whims?
Theme-based
Mr.Vedula has a few tips for those opting for designer lamps.
He advises the customers to choose a theme for their homes and plan lighting accordingly.
“Instructions about the wattage of bulbs to be used inside the lamp shades should be followed strictly. Otherwise, the holder will get damaged,” he says.
And also, only feather brushes should be used to dust the lamp shades so as to avoid scratches and tears.
