Delhi looking for treating waste in other cities
Faced with the onerous task of handling heaps of solid waste generated from households, Delhi is scouting for setting waste treatment facilities in Kanpur and other cities in neighbouring States. According to a study, Delhi generates about 6,000 tonnes of solid waste daily against 5,200 tonnes by Mumbai, 2,800 by Bangalore and 2,675 tonnes by Chennai.
“The waste generation is slated to increase due to economic and population growth,” Dwarka Nath of the Delhi Pollution Control Board said at a two-day national workshop on medical, municipal waste.
He said the Government had also given authorisation for setting up three new plants for power generation and compost at Okhla, Timarpur and Ghazipur.
“We are also in the process of authorising a private developer for starting a treatment, storage, disposal facility for hazardous waste at Guman Hera in the capital,” he said.
Environmental groups have urged the Government to ensure that the issue should not be reduced to projection of waste as an economic resource.
Ravi Agarwal, director, Toxics Link, highlighted the three cardinal aspects that have to be focused vis-a-vis waste management in the country, namely: availability of best practices and technology, community participation and transparency in governance.
