A rose with style and substance

Beauty and intrinsic value set the paneer rose apart, says Hema Vijay

Therapeutic: The soft and shiny petals of the paneer rose have medicinal properties.

The paneer rose is now becoming a rarity in our gardens. What we have instead are roses of vibrant colours, but no intrinsic value apart from their looks.

Contrast this with the qualities of the paneer rose, native to our State. The soft and shiny petals of the paneer rose have medicinal properties. Imbibing its petals cures stomach aches and clears your intestines from parasites as well. Delicious gulk and prepared by sun-drying these petals after soaking them in honey exerts the same effect and is also said to relieve constipation.

Native advantage

The Rosa damascena or paneer rose is a native plant, and so does extremely well in our climate, and will not wither even in the peak of summer. The plant needs bright sunlight, but can be grown in the balcony if sufficient sunlight falls on it. The plant requires a litre of water daily.

The paneer rose is best grown in a soil mixture that contains one part river sand, one part manure and one part red earth. Besides this, if you add powdered egg shells to the soil, both the quality and number of flowers go up dramatically. The flower yield almost doubles and the petals stay from falling for a doubly long time! The plant can be grown from stem cuttings. Alternatively, you may grow the plant by stem layering the plant in soil.

This plant’s rose-hued flowers may not dazzle the onlooker as much as its other colourful counterparts. But, the charm of the paneer rose lies in its subtle beauty, and the fact that it is a rose that has both style and substance. It is a very fragrant plant, and it is from the flowers of this plant that rose water or ‘paneer’ is made.
