Wooing business: Polynum sheets used at the new exhibition hall coming up at CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex in Coimbatore

When the International Industrial Trade Fair will be held at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex in Coimbatore in the first week of February, the venue will have about two lakh sq.ft. of additional built-up area.

The complex, which has totally hosted about 50 fairs and exhibitions in the last seven years, already has three halls (A, B, C) of totally 1.1 lakh sq.ft. built up area.

Considering the demand for additional space for exhibitions, the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) and the COINTEC governing council decided to have two more halls and a food court on the 40-acre trade fair grounds.

Civil works

A Rs. 25-crore project was finalised for this purpose and civil works started in July 2007. The works will be over by the end of this month and it has taken just 145 to 150 days to add the two lakh sq.ft., points out R. Palanisami, President of the COINTEC.

The new exhibition hall.

“Technically the structure is a marvel,” he told presspersons.

The roof truss is designed as a web and corrugated sheets have been used.

Concrete flooring of one foot thickness, underground wiring, imported material for roofing (polynum) and expansive green cover are some of the other noteworthy features in the new buildings.

Air-cooled hall

Hall D will be an air-cooled exhibition hall and Hall E an air-conditioned one for social gatherings and exhibition purpose with a dining space. An air-conditioned food court is also coming up with a seating capacity of 750.

The food court will be operational on all 365 days of the year.

While Hall E with a seating capacity of 2,500 will be only for display of light weight industrial goods, Hall D will be able to accommodate heavy machinery too, adds C. Muthusami, the CODISSIA president.

Power supply

For any trade fair or exhibition, power supply will not be a problem if the exhibitors wanted to display the machinery in working condition.

With these additional facilities, individual halls can be rented out for seminars, conventions and social events. “We are looking at a minimum of 100 days occupancy in a year,” says Mr. Palanisami.

Sewage treatment

Special focus has been given for energy and water conservation, sewage treatment and facilities for the physically disabled.

“We plan to apply for evaluation of the building to get green building status,” he says.

Parking spaces

Rainwater harvesting facilities for each hall and adequate ventilation have been provided.

Though the COINTEC plans to have multi-level parking spaces in the future, adequate arrangements have been made to park over 3,000 cars now. The occupancy rates for exhibitors are nearly 40 per cent lower than that in cities such as Chennai and Bangalore. With this new facility, Coimbatore has one of the best exhibition infrastructures and this will be a boost to industrial activities here, they point out.

International exhibitions, corporate events and trade shows could be organised.
